After breaky and pack up we headed off for our last day on Goog’s track.
After some final photos of the Lake we meandered up the track a bit to stop off the Memorials. These are two memorials to Goog and his son Dinger, who built the track. Unfortunately they were both killed in car accidents – separate ones. The memorials were quite interesting, as not only did they hold the plaques from the family, travellers have left a range of mementos – full cans/bottles of beer and the trees growing beside the markers have become money trees, with people pushing or hammering coins into the tree trunks, in memory of Goog and Dinger. We proceeded to do the same.
Proceeding further along we did a short loop off to Goog’s waterhole, another indigenous watering place, with some very pongy water in it and obvious signs of camels having been around it. Again some nice little flowers etc as well.
Back onto the track and the last of the sandhills, before passing through the dog fence gate and stop for lunch and the pumping up of tyres and lowering of sandflags. Then very quickly back into civilisation with a wide gravel road, flanked by pastures for a few kms, before hitting the blacktop again.
We passed through the quarantine station, without having to forfeit any fruit/veg, as we had only been on Goog’s trak. We landed in Ceduna, for a look, discovered we had arrived in time for the Ceduna Oysterfest, on the SA Labour Day long weekend, so we hoofed it out to Shelly Beach Caravan Park, to book some sites, as the town was filling fast. We had some non powered sites in a very well appointed CP, which had single bathrooms rather than the communal shower blocks.
It was very windy and cold, and even some rain as we left Goog’s track. So setting up the tents was in between showers. We then hit the showers and laundry in a BIG way, there was a party in the laundry as we vied for use of 3 machines and 2 driers. Also whilst washing, we managed to refill water tanks and bladders which had been pretty much emptied out on Goog’s.
Whilst washing/drying etc, the rains hit, and we were chasing the washing and driers for a bit.
We then ventured out for Pizza for tea and some discussion about the ‘plans’ for the remaining days.
Given the OysterFest and need for shopping etc, we determined that another night is Ceduna was required…very excited as this meant no tent pull down and put up….Yay!
After Pizza some returned home to bed, whilst some visited the camp kitchen for a nightcap. It was pretty cold and wet, but cuppa’s went down well, as we all retired to dry, warm tents.
